On Friday, senior politician Dinesh Gunawardena took over as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka when President Ranil Wickremesinghe swore in his new Cabinet. Dinesh Gunawardena was sworn in at the same time.
Gunawardena, who is 73 years old and a prominent figure in Sri Lankan politics, has previously held the positions of minister of education and minister of foreign affairs. In April, he was given the position of Home Minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was in office at the time.
After Wickremesinghe, 73, was inaugurated in as the nation’s eighth president on Thursday, the job of prime minister became vacant as a result. This came about as a result of Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s decision to flee the country and subsequently resign as president.
He has advocated for cooperation amongst members of both parties in order to overcome the severe economic crisis that the nation is now experiencing.
