The operator of the nuclear plant complex in Russian-held Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine, Energoatom, said on Thursday that one of the two operable reactors at the facility had been shut down owing to bombardment from Russia.
Energoatom said the following on the messaging app Telegram: “The emergency protection was triggered as a consequence of further mortar bombardment by Russian troops at the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and the operational fifth power unit was shut down.”
In addition, Energoatom said that “power unit No. 6 continues to function in the energy system of Ukraine,” and that it is now providing the power plant with enough electricity to meet its own requirements.
