“Avatar: The Way of Water” has surpassed $2 billion at the worldwide box office, becoming the third James Cameron picture to do so.
The original “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame,” Cameron’s “Titanic,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Avengers: Infinity War” are the only other films to achieve this metric.
As of Sunday, “The Way of Water” has grossed $598 million domestically and $1,426,000 million internationally. The film is now the sixth highest-grossing film of all time and will certainly go up the list as it continues to play in cinemas.
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, said, “The picture has now entered a very elite box office club and has made it seem nearly easy.”
The box office has failed to recover since the epidemic, as viewers have gravitated toward home watching and fewer films have been released in theatres. As the film industry recovers, films such as “The Way of Water” have shown that audiences are willing to return to large-scale spectacles. And many are ready to pay for luxury presentations such as IMAX or big format screens, which are often more expensive.
While “The Way of Water” has performed less well than anticipated in China due to an increase in Covid numbers and hospitalizations, ticket sales in France, Germany, and Korea have been good.
Reaching $2 billion is a positive indicator for the Avatar series, which has three additional movies scheduled to be released over the next five years. Cameron has previously said that the picture would need to be the third or fourth biggest-earning film in history to break even.
It is unknown how much the picture cost to produce, although estimates vary from $250 million to $350 million, excluding marketing expenses.
There is no direct competition for “The Way of Water” until mid-February, when another Disney film, Marvel Studios‘ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania,” is launched.
