After the United States Senate confirmed Dr. Evelyn N. Wang to serve as Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) at the United States Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm released the following statement:
“I cannot express how appreciative I am to the Senate for approving Dr. Evelyn Wang’s nomination to the position of Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy at the Department of Energy. We depend on the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) more than ever before to provide assistance for early-stage energy solutions that will assist us in combating climate change and enhancing American competitiveness. The knowledge and experience that Dr. Wang brings to the table in the field of ground-breaking research will guarantee that ARPA-E maintains its position as a primary driver of innovation and climate action. I am very appreciative of Dr. Wang’s desire to serve the American people, and we are thrilled to have her join the DOE.
Dr. Evelyn N. Wang is now serving dual roles at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she is both the Ford Professor of Engineering and the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department. In her study, she blends heat and mass transport mechanisms with nanoengineered materials in order to develop novel solutions for issues pertaining to the purification of water and energy. She is a pioneer in the field of phase-change heat transfer research, which she has used to the thermal management of electronics, thermal batteries, the conversion of solar thermal energy, water harvesting, and desalination systems.
She held the position of Associate Director of the Department of Energy’s Solid-State Solar-Thermal Energy Conversion Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In addition to that, she worked as a consultant for the Institute for Defense Analyses, where she promoted stronger cooperation between academic institutions and the military.
Dr. Wang spent her formative years in the Golden State, where she later went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Stanford University, and a postdoctoral research position at Bell Laboratories, Alcatel-Lucent.
