Serena Williams has announced that she will end her tennis career after the US Open

SportsSerena Williams has announced that she will end her tennis career after the US Open

Her would seem like tennis superstar Serena Williams has decided to call it quits after a long career.

After winning her first singles match in over a year and a half at the Canadian Open, where she advanced to the first round for the first time in 14 months, the 23-time Grand Slam winner claimed that she saw “light at the end of the tunnel.”

In an interview with Vogue that was published hours after the match, she disclosed that since she would be turning 41 in September, “something’s had to give,” and that she is trying to have another kid. The interview was published online.

I have been considering this to be a transition, but I want to be careful about how I use that term, since it conveys a meaning that is extremely particular and significant to a group of individuals. The term “evolution” may be the most appropriate one to use when attempting to explain what I’m working on.

I’m here to inform you that I’m transitioning away from tennis and into other activities that are important to me. In the background, a few years ago, I discreetly established Serena Ventures as a venture capital business. After that, I didn’t waste much time getting married and having kids. I have aspirations to broaden the scope of that family. However, I have been hesitant to accept to myself or anybody else that I need to move on from playing tennis since I have enjoyed the sport so much.

It’s almost like a taboo subject for Alexis, my husband, and I to discuss it; we haven’t done so much. I can’t even broach the subject with my parents because of how embarrassing it would make them feel. It’s almost as if it isn’t real unless you say it out loud to yourself. When I think about it, I get a lump in my throat that makes swallowing unpleasant, and I start crying. My therapist is the only other person I’ve ever gone there with in any significant capacity.

Williams is slated to compete in the Western & Southern Open during both this week and the next week before the start of the US Open on August 29.
